Will CAMTC bring back the MBLEx?

Updated: Sep 3, 2023

The MBLEx, which stands for Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination, is a standardized test designed to assess the knowledge and skills of individuals seeking to become licensed massage therapists in the United States. It is administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) and is used by many states as part of their licensing process for massage therapists. The MBLEx covers various topics, including anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, ethics, and various massage techniques.

The California Massage Therapy Council (CAMTC) does not require massage therapists to take the MBLEx though it did at one time. The MBLEx was originally adopted by CAMTC because the state felt it was important to have an assessment of a new practitioners baseline knowledge and as an accepted tool in other states it seemed like an obvious choice. The MBLExrequirement was paused in 2012 due to the examination only being available in English and Spanish.

CAMTC currently has its own certification process for massage therapists in California. To become certified by CAMTC, applicants must meet specific education and training requirements, pass a background check, and provide proof of completing a minimum number of hours in massage education in a CAMTC approved school.

While the MBLEx is not a requirement for CAMTC certification, it may still be beneficial for massage therapists in California to take the exam as it can demonstrate their knowledge and competency in the field, which may be advantageous for employment opportunities or obtaining licensure in other states.

Sabrina, IPSB’s General Manager, attended the California Assessment Examination Requirement Stakeholders Summit hosted by CAMTC on Tuesday, Jun 6 where it was discussed whether or not the MBLEx should be added as a requirement for certification in California. As a reputable Massage Therapy school with a proven history of educating some of the most skilled therapists in the field, CAMTC is looking to IPSB for guidance on this issue.

We would like to poll our audience.

1. If you are currently certified in California by CAMTC, have you voluntarily taken the MBLEx?

2. If you are currently a student in training, would you be interested in taking the MBLEx?
